This report covers Saturday, June 10, 2000, Day 6 of our Las Vegas/Henderson trip.
Rosalyn wanted to have her hair done before we flew out here, but I postponed my haircut in order to get a head (no pun intended) start on finding a good barber in Henderson.
It is fascinating to watch not just all the residential complexes as they evolve, but also the retail and service businesses that seem to spring up overnight. Many of these are in small to moderate-size strip malls, and they give no hint of any special design features that may lie within.
So it was when I walked into the Village Barber Shop, a new establishment in the Horizon Marketplace shopping plaza at Eastern and Horizon Ridge. The shop is a marvelous marriage of the old and new, combining modern hair-cutting stations with an evocation of a turn-of-the century tonsorial parlor. Polished wood floor, handsome dark wainscoting, rich maroon colors and other touches create a very classy effect.
A short wait for service resulted in a decent $13 haircut. My barber said at least 50 percent of their customers are first-timers at the shop, and business is growing dramatically as new residents flood into the area.
Next it was a trip over to Chinatown Mall on Spring Mountain for the obligatory meal at Sam Woo BBQ. I ordered my usual half roast duck, switching from my customary BBQ pork fried rice to young-chow fried rice, which has more ingredients. Roz again enjoyed the house special chow mein, more like the lo mein that many readers around the country are familiar with. Add in one soft drink and we had a nice lunch for $26.
Leaving Sam Woo, we drove over to Office Furniture Concepts on Tropicana, where we ordered all the furniture components to outfit my new home office. At the same time, Roz saw a desk she liked for the home office area she'll have in our guest-bedroom wing, so we ordered that also. All these pieces will be delivered when we return in August, and the smoothness of the ordering process was the payoff for the thorough shopping and research we did on previous visits.
While driving west on Flamingo earlier, we saw that the new pedestrian bridge over I-15 has gone into service, finally making it a safe proposition to walk between the Strip and The Rio. This was an improvement that corrects a major safety hazard, and has been long in coming.
Next stop was Walker Furniture, where we found a handsome loveseat that will go into our master bedroom along with a matching hassock. We also saw a lovely painting of a desert scene that will go into the master bedroom.
Believe me, at this moment, sore of feet and physically spent, we are the living embodiment of "shop 'til you drop."
We ended the day with a quick meal at the new Taco Bell just below the entrance to Sun City Anthem, followed by a leisurely drive around our new neighborhood to find landscaping ideas we might like for ourselves.
And so ended Day 6.
