Las Vegas Trip Report

Day Three - June 10, 2000

OUCH!! Woke up this morning totally unable to move. My back had stiffened up overnight and was totally uncooperative. I could feel the tight muscles down my right leg and all the way up to my shoulder. This wasn't going to be any small muscle pull and it was going to be a long day. I took some pain reliever and thanked my lucky stars that I had packed some food as there was no way I was getting down to the Brew Pub or the Buffet for breakfast.

When things weren't better at noon I called Dan and talked about my options. We talked about him coming into town tonight and blowing off his sister, but I wasn't sure how much good it would do. We agreed to have him move his flight up to an earlier one on Sunday and I'd do what I could to take care of myself in the room. Hopefully things would get better with some bed rest and heating pad use.

So, snacks and pay per view movies and my book were the schedule for Saturday. Being ill or injured in Las Vegas is no picnic. It's hard to look out the window at the Big Shot on the Stratosphere and all that fun going on outside and know there's no way you can participate. I could only hope that things would get better tomorrow.

The good side of this is that I get an opportunity to see some amusing things I might not otherwise have noticed. I got a kick out of the commercials for the Surf Buffet at the Boardwalk. They have a super heavyweight boxer guy shouting about it being the best buffet in town (nevermind that even the pictures prove that it's 90% inedible). I don't know, but I can't help but picture this guy at the Big Empire Social. He'd fit right in.

Also, across the street, on the side of the building at the California, there's a bit sign in blinking lights that says "at the Cal". Above that is a neon sign that changes to say a series of four things. EAT at the Cal, PARK at the Cal PLAY at the Cal and DST at the Cal. It's that last on that confuses me. What is it supposed to mean? Dust at the Cal? I'm assuming it's like destine at the Cal, but that doesn't make sense either. If they can say PLAY, why doesn't the sign just say STAY? Maybe I shouldn't be taking as many of these muscle relaxants as I have been. Look at all the pretty colors out my window.... :-)

At about 11pm, I headed downstairs to get something to eat as I was starving! The brew pub was busy, so I put in an order and sat down at the triple play video poker nearby.

I love to play the Triple Play Video Poker at Main Street Station. If you're playing full coins and are a slot club member, and you hit a four of a kind, you get a scratch off card. The value of the card is from $1 to $5000. I've never gotten anything larger than $5, but I know people who have seen someone get a $1000 card, so they are out there.

But my favorite thing is when you're dealt 4 of a kind on the triple play machines. That means you get three cards and three times the chances to win. I got dealt four sixes, but unfortunately none of my cards were the biggies.
